Do you remember all the reports in seemingly every mainstream media outlet that researchers had found that there was no connection between the mercury in vaccines and autism? It was everywhere. The quick version of the story is that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hired a consultant from Denmark to do some work investigating the possible connection between the mercury in vaccines and autism. Denmark took the mercury (thimerosal) out of their childhood vaccine schedule, and this researcher, Poul Thorsen, and his team were to study whether the rate of autism went down afterwards.
CDC gave Thorsen and his team millions in grant money. Thorsen famously reported that the rate of autism did not go down and all his follow up studies showed the same. This news was trumpted all over the world as proof that vaccines don’t cause autism. But the story does not stop there.
Thorsen absconded with a bunch of CDC’s grant money and is on the run. He supposedly embezzled a million dollars. A watchdog group, CoMeD, filed a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which oversees CDC, alleging that Thorsen’s research was fraudulent and that he and his co-researchers covered up the results showing that autism did indeed go down after the mercury was removed.
Interestingly, the media has been largely silent on these issues. There were few reports in the mainstream media about Thorsen being on the run and having embezzled plenty of cash. Nor were there reports questioning the validity of his research. CDC and all vaccine authorities stand by Thorsen’s work even while he is listed as one of their most wanted fugitives! What do you think? Would you trust the findings of someone who is accused of running off with a million bucks on something as important and hotly debated as the mercury-autism link?
