Vaccines: The $100 Billion Behemoth

Ever wonder why there is so much pressure to vaccinate? And why there is a continuous stream of articles and reports in print, on TV and on the web about the dangers of not vaccinating and about how careless and downright dangerous or stupid you are if you don’t vaccinate?

It is always useful to remember the old adage: follow the money.

This press release about the global market for vaccines is very helpful in doing just that:

“Though the vaccines segment forms a very small portion of the global pharmaceutical drug sales…, the growth rate in this market has been extraordinary.”

And:

“The global market for vaccines is currently estimated to be worth more than US$ 30 Billion. With factors like advances in immunology, genetics and vaccine technology as well as increased demand from population growth in emerging economies, the global vaccine market is expected to surpass estimated USD 100 billion by 2025.”

In case that did not hit you, let us restate that: the market for vaccines is experiencing super high growth and the potential market size is $100 BILLION annually.

On top of that, let’s not forget that the pharmaceutical companies have no liability in some countries for their vaccines – no they can’t be sued when their vaccines cause harm like they can be with their other drugs (think about Vioxx and Avandia and the $3 billion fine just paid by GlaxoSmithKline which may sound big but is just chump change to these behemoths). And if they can be sued, it is almost impossible to prevail – it is quintessentially David versus Goliath.

Given all the growth, the market potential, and the lack of legal and financial liability (read: no downside) it is not hard to imagine, that the pharmaceutical giants would do anything in their power to defend the golden goose of vaccines – no matter the cost.

They and the health authorities (who are often funded by the vaccine makers – WHO or CDC) will cover up when 17 babies die in China after a Hepatitis B vaccine , or when babies die in countries all over Asia after a pentavalent vaccine, or when 60,000 Indian children develop polio after taking their live virus polio drops (which health authorities KNOW can cause polio), or when half of all American kids (millions of children) suffer from a chronic illness, or millions of kids around the globe develop autism after their vaccines.

They will defend the program because your kid is simply not worth $100 billion to them.
